i have a headcanon that Spock can’t work out magic tricks because being illusions they’re not logical/don’t present enough data for him to do more than vaguely guess how it was done

and that Jim and Uhura and Bones bust out a deck of cards every so often so they can watch the mounting amused annoyance Spock tries to hide

He probably gets curious and sneakily looks up a bunch of books on magic tricks and teaches himself how they work—with the net effect that Spock (a) is now theoretically the resident expert on magic tricks (b) still can’t actually do them himself and (c) maintains they are illogical.

Of course, everybody else thinks this is brilliantly funny and won’t let the matter drop. Pretty soon Uhura’s translating instructions for magic tricks from various alien languages (some of which require upwards of two arms to perform, so she and Bones have to practice them together) just so Spock can’t look them up and spoil the fun.

I would see Spock (or any other Vulcan for that matter) as being incredibly observant. He’d probably get the basic sleight of hand tricks.

I know these are old news, but I ran across one today and honestly, I will pay $10 for proof that you permanently defaced one of these NYC subway ads.

They’re so fucking offensive they make it embarrassing to make eye contact with most families on the subway because there’s a giant bright ad saying “fuck you” to young, poor, or unmarried parents, like they all planned to be raising kids in the toughest situations, because they’re idiots who don’t understand life is hard and if only we recited some facts at them we could knowledge the babies away.

This is actually terrifying though.

A top of the line 3D printing system which costs tens of thousands of dollars can create a crude firearm. Considering that anyone with access to a basic machine shop can easily construct a much better firearm for a few hundred dollars, I’m really not seeing any huge threat here.

I’d bet that the number of people with access to a high-end 3D printer is roughly the the same as the number of people who have access to a machine shop and the skills to make a gun. The main difference is that just about anyone can learn to use a 3D printer, while gunsmithing is a skill that takes a long time to acquire.

Personally, I agree that this one firearm is no big deal. But I’d also say that it’s the beginning of a new trend and not a random fluke.

You are greatly overestimating the cost of machine tools, and you are also greatly overestimating how difficult it is to learn how to use one. Learning how to use conventional machine tools is something that anyone can learn at minimal cost from widely available classes at their local community college, whereas operating the sort of high end 3D printing system used here requires extremely specialized training.

We’re not talking a MakerBot here. We’re talking a high end industrial rapid prototyping rig, something that is very much the opposite of user friendly. The Dimension SST costs $35,000 and is considered extremely low cost for a unit on that level. A more typical price would be on the order of $50,000.

If you are correct about the ease of creating a firearm with the inexpensive tolls found in a machine shop with skills learned at nearly any community college, then our country would be faced with a gun violence problem that would make the current problem seem like a walk in the park. Who would ever purchase a firearm when you could easily learn to make one on your own?

Okay, here’s a bit of history for you: the 3D-printed “Liberator” pistol is actually named after a WWII-era pistol called the FP-45 Liberator, which was a gun specifically designed to be cheaply and easily mass-produced by common machine shops. The Allies planned to paradrop both Liberator pistol schematics and actual Liberator pistols all over occupied Europe to arm the Resistance.

The FP-45 Liberator can be produced in a minimally equipped machine shop for $2.40 worth of materials. The modern Liberator requires a $35,000 prototyping rig and $540+ worth of materials (two plastic cartridges at $260 a pop, plus several different solvents at $30-$60 a pop).

Here’s an even bigger “threat”, again from World War II. The Sten submachine gun is a fully automatic weapon, and it too was designed to be cheaply and easily mass-produced by common machine shops. You could literally build it in a toy shop; it required only simple stamped metal parts and about five man-hours of labor, so a single worker with minimal resources could put out three or four per day.

Why isn’t the criminal underworld flooded with these things already? Because they suck. Outside of Hollywood movies, full automatic weapons have very little utility to criminals, and Liberator type pistols are crude single-shot weapons.

All you are doing is throwing out historical red herrings that don’t actually address my argument (btw. I don’t need a history lesson on WWII firearms. That topic was extensively covered in my early 20’s. Also, you could easily add the M3 and MP 3008 to the list of cheap, stamped metal submachine guns from WWII).

For the third time now, I agree with you that this pistol itself isn’t a problem. But the technology that made it will continue to evolve. Without government intervention/regulation, 3D printed firearms will be a major problem in 5 to 10 years.

The MP 3008 is the Sten — it’s a German clone of the British Sten, differing only in a few minor details. And the M3, while cheap and made of stamped metal, was not designed to be mass-produced in ordinary machine shops. The United States did not have a need for that because we had plenty of industrial manufacturing capability. So it’s not really applicable to this discussion.

The point is, you were arguing that, “It can’t be that simple to manufacture cheap firearms, or we’d already be flooded with them.” The fact is that it is that simple; the reasons we’re not flooded with them are (as I pointed out) performance and functionality, not pure cost. That’s exactly why 3D printing is not the huge threat you claim: all it can produce now or in the conceivable future are minimally functional low performance weapons at high cost.

“The future” is not a magic wand that will fix all problems with an emergent technology. For one thing, plastic is literally plastic; it’s malleable under high temperature and/or high pressure, which makes it an inherently poor material for firearms. 3D printing can conceivably create custom or semi-custom firearms parts at low cost in the future, but not entire guns. Mechanical actions in general and firearm actions in particular are just something that are not well-suited to additive fabrication.

The MP3008 was very similar, but had enough changes that I’d consider it a separate weapon, especially when you consider that the Germans did make exact clones of the Sten. Fair point on the M3.

You’re the one who asserted that one could make a much better firearm with a machine shop for a few hundred dollars. I stated that being flooded with such firearms would be the result if that was the case. Now you’re saying that it’s really not possible because any firearm that has been produced in such a manner has been of dubious quality at best.

I think the core of our disagreement comes from where we believe 3D printing is going. Yes, current consumer 3D printers use ABS plastic, but someone will figure out how to make a consumer model that prints DLP resin. We already know how to out objects made of metal, and at some point there will be a consumer 3D printer that can do it.

You say the future isn’t a magic wand and I agree. But I think the past 50 years have provided more than enough examples of new technologies changing the world for us to reasonably assume that 3D printing will do the same.
